Moxibustion is a traditional therapy of Korea which originated in the period of Ancient Joson (early 30th century BC-108 BC).
From olden times the Korean people have cauterized regions corresponding to diseases with dried mugwort. Mugwort is a kind of plant which is widely distributed in the country.
In the Stone Age they actively applied stone needles and mugwort in medical treatment. The moxibustion therapy underwent remarkable development in the period of Koryo (918-1392).
In medical education the main emphasis was put on moxibustion and acupuncture.
A book on the experience in moxibustion and acupuncture and methods of treating different diseases with moxibustion was published in 1644, providing a scientific guarantee for the development of the therapy.
The therapy is applied mainly to arrhythmia, anginophobia, valvular disorder, myocardial infarction and other ischemic heart diseases, cystitis, hepatic cirrhosis, prostatic pile, hydroperitoneum and other obstinate digestive diseases, nervous system diseases like facial paralysis and obstinate gynaecological diseases.
It can be applied anywhere if some moxa and a place for the patient to lie are available.
In case of a refractory disease, one treatment period is 15 to 30 days, during which three to five balls of moxa are cauterized on one spot once a day. The spots differ according to the type of the diseases and the focus conditions.
Moxibusiton is a wonderful therapy, but it has a defect of leaving marks on the skin. Nowadays indirect moxibustion is applied to overcome the defect.
The DPRK positively encourages the therapy which is one of the major achievements in the traditional Koryo medicine of the Korean nation, so that it can actively contribute to the promotion of the people’s health.
