The DPRK boasts many precious historical relics associated with the resourcefulness, wisdom and talents of the Korean nation.
Among them is Ilju Gate which stands at the entrance to the Sogwang Temple, built in 1751, in Kosong County, Kangwon Province.
The gate with a gable roof weighing hundreds of tons is supported by a wooden pillar based on two one-odd-metre-high stone columns, giving a glimpse into the fine architecture of Korean ancestors.
The gable roof, one side of which is 8 metres long, resembles an inscribed quadrangle on a plane.
The stone and wooden pillars are attached vertically to support the heavy roof, but the structure is mechanically very stable.
All the elements of the pillars and the roof are so harmonious and stable that the gate is unaffected by earthquakes and strong winds.
It is an indigenous structure in terms of architecture and structural mechanics.
The outstanding architectural skills of the nation are also represented by the Podok Hermitage at the Phyohun Temple in Kumgang County, Kangwon Province.
The hermitage was built in the period of Koguryo and rebuilt in 1675.
It looks like a three-storey building as it consists of a single-storey and gable-roofed structure, the facade of which is 3.35 metres long, with two layers of structures with ridge and hip roofs above it respectively.
Moreover, it hangs in the middle of a precipitous cliff, admiringly supported by a 7.3-metre-high copper pillar.
