Sumbakkokjil (hide-and-seek) is a children’s game in which a taggerhas to look for other children who have hidden themselves.
The game has long been played in Korea.
The word sumbakkokjilis a native Korean word and is derived from the method of playing the game.
The game was often played on moonlit evenings in autumn.
Before the game, the tagger and his position arefixed.
The tagger is decided on by the toss.
As his position, a distinctive thing on the ground isfixed, such as a tree at the corner of the yard, a wall or a rock.
Then the tagger leans against the position with hiseyes closed and counts a specified number to give the other children time tohide.
A round of the game ends when all other childrencome out after being caught or without being caught.
Then only the caught children gather to decide onthe tagger again to continue the game.
The game suits the psychology of children.
First, it enables children to have a good time.
Children enjoy themselves, hiding, finding and runningout of hiding.
It also helps children develop the ability to graspbehavioural psychology.
Children of about ten are fond of playing the game,which helps them develop the ability to count and grasp behavioural psychology.
Children have to think where and how to hide themselvesso that the tagger cannot find them and the tagger has to think where and howthey will hide. This process serves as a good occasion for making childrenenjoy themselves and develop their intelligence as well.
As seen above, the long-standing game helpschildren have a good time while enabling them to develop powers of meticulousobservation of surroundings, circumstantial judgment and agility.
