The Phothae area in the city of Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province, boasts remarkable landscapes.
The area is centred on Mt Phothae, which is largely divided into Pukphothae and Namphothae.
The former, 2 288m above sea level, is the main peak of the Mt Pukphothae volcano.
The mountain, the top of which is triangular, has a steep cliff on its southern slope, and its northeastern and northwestern sides descend gently to the Paektu lava plateau.
From its southern foot start the Karim and Sohongdan streams, and from its eastern foot a tributary of the Sodu River.
The Pukphothae volcano has a rectangular crater, 4.5km long and 2km wide.
Both along the slope and on the ridge of the volcanic body are lots of cliffs and rock faces, dotted with a myriad of lava cliffs and towers.
Among them are geological points of great significance such as lava rocks.
Rich in forest resources, Mt Pukphothae is densely covered by groves of such trees as larch, Abies nephrolepis, Picea jezoensis, birch and aspen.
Mt Namphothae, rising 2 433m above sea level, is shaped like a cone.
The Namphothae volcano of great academic significance is featured by a sharp protuberance of the gigantic granitic body, unlikely to be seen in other volcanic mountains, craters and volcanic rocks on top of it, and consequent geomorphological wonders, which constitute an incredible and distinctive volcanic landscape.
A talus, or a rock slope, sprawls over the upper part of the forest line directly affected by frost weathering, with rare granitic rocks, not volcanic ones, revealing themselves on the top of the mountain over 2 000m above sea level. The Karim Stream flows down on its eastern slope, with the Phothae Stream on its western slope.
The mountain is home to plants such as Pinus pumila , Salix rotundifolia , Dryas , rhododendron, blueberry tree, Therorhodion redowskianum and Majanthemum bifolium , and animals like sable, Martes flavigula , Nemorhaedus goral , and musk deer.
Mt Phothae has still unknown landscapes, especially unique geological bodies of volcanic significance, said Pak Hyon Uk, chief of the Geology Institute of the State Academy of Sciences.
Such beautiful landscapes make the area suitable for mountain tourism in the DPRK.
