The Honghyon white heron stays from late April to early November every year in a habitat northwest of the Honghyon Railway Station, located some eight kilometres southwest of the seat of Paechon County, South Hwanghae Province.
There is a grove of pine trees at the northern foot of Mt Thomi, 250m above sea level, and it serves as a shelter for the white herons which have bred nearby. They wander around the vast stretches of field in the county to seek food and come back to the shelter together with their young at night.
From late April the birds begin to gather in the habitat, making up thousands between July and August, the number gradually dwindling from late October until it reaches nil in mid-November.
As one of the largest habitats for white herons in the DPRK, this place is under good protection.
