In early January last year there held a consultative meeting, which brought together teachers of the table tennis department at Korea University of Physical Education.
One of the main topics of the meeting was to help two teachers of the department prepare themselves for the International Umpire Examination.
In fact, it was not an easy job to prepare two teachers to qualify as international umpires at the same time, given the demanding requirements of the International Table Tennis Federation.
To qualify as an international umpire, each candidate needs to be able to deal with different situations in matches skilfully in line with the rules of the event and to possess good knowledge of foreign languages as well. At the meeting Kim Sung Hwan, head of the department, called for helping the candidates prepare well for the examination, saying that if both passed the exam it would mean all the teachers at the department qualified as international umpires. The five teachers who were already certified as international umpires responded to his call and suggested original ideas of their own.
The two candidates got heartened and buckled down.
One of them had ever taken an examination. He failed the exam as he did not know how to umpire a match between a wheelchaired player and a one-legged player—an experience unfamiliar to himself.
Drawing a lesson from it, the department ensured that the candidates built up their capacity so that they could fairly umpire any categories of matches, while helping them improve their foreign language skills.
It also made a point of letting them umpire as many national matches as possible to enhance their practical abilities.
They both passed the examination in November last year.
Thus, all of the teachers of the department qualified as international umpires, with one having qualified as a basic certified referee.
