Among Korea’s traditional therapies is a combination of smoking and steaming. Koreans have long used Ephedra sinica , Miricacalia firma , arrowroots, apricot seeds and other Koryo medicinal stuffs to facilitate sweating when they have a sauna.
According to old medical records, they poured warm water mixed with Koryo medicines over themselves while inhaling gaseous medicine and drinking decoctions in a sauna-like room. This kind of therapy was recognized as remarkably effective for treating obstinate diseases as it helps to remove the root cause of the diseases and recover all of the body functions.
Recently Jo Il Jun, chief of the circulatory internal department of Pyongyang Municipal Hospital No. 2, has introduced the therapy into clinical practice. While delving into Koryo medicine, he got to know about the therapy.
Earlier, he confirmed the efficacy of the therapy based on Koryo medicines while treating the cases of circulatory diseases.
This prompted him to try to apply the smoking and steaming therapy.
But it was no easy job to apply to clinical practice the therapy which forms a complete system as the old medical records put it.
First of all, he had to select medicinal stuffs, make medications and identify the amount to inhale according to the physical constitutions of patients and to build a relevant treatment room.
He read numerous medical books at his leisure to find out relevant treatment methods and launched the therapy after he arranged a treatment room furnished with heater, automatic temperature sensor and ultrasonic generator.
He always lends an ear to the opinions of patients after they receive treatment and combines the Koryo therapies of acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and massage in proper rate. And, he tries only a single kind of Western medicine on a particular symptom.
In this way he has successfully treated many circulatory and obstinate diseases.
“Patients vary in physical constitution even though they suffer from the same circulatory disease. Therefore, the same method does not work on all of them equally. The medical treatment method developed by our ancestors should be developed through steady study however good they are. Only then can it make a substantial contribution to promoting public health,” said Jo.
