The Paper Engineering Institute of the State Academy of Sciences has developed a technology of making paper by using fallen leaves, which draws public attention. In general, it takes some 17 full-grown trees to make a ton of paper, but the new technology requires only two or three tons of fallen leaves for producing the same amount of paper.
Researchers of the institute started a project several years ago to use fallen leaves especially from broadleaf trees such as maple, ginkgo, zelkova, chestnut and oak—species that are widely grown in the DPRK and easy to collect.
They analysed the biological, physical and chemical characteristics of the fallen leaves of each species and devised various techniques to use them as raw materials for papermaking. In the course of this, they managed to produce pulp with dead leaves, providing a guarantee for making packing paper and paper containers for saplings.
On this basis, they developed a technology of producing packing paper and two-ply lining paper for wall and floor by mixing waste paper pulp with a certain amount of fallen leaf pulp produced in the Kimhwa County Paper Mill in Kangwon Province.
The paper containers of saplings, water-resistant and penetrable, are moulded by mixing waste paper pulp or byproducts from papermaking with some amounts of fallen leaf pulp and additives. Such technology is supposed to cut the cost of production by at least half compared to plastic containers and to be more environmentally friendly and ensure higher rooting rate of saplings since the paper containers are biologically degradable and they are planted with saplings in them.
Now the institute is working on a project to help the regional paper mills to be newly built set up lines of producing fallen leaf pulp and two-ply paper so as to remarkably cut the production cost of lining paper for wall and floor as well as packing paper.
In addition, it continues to intensify the research to introduce the technology of making paper containers of saplings to different tree nurseries and to improve the quality of fallen leaf pulp and cut the cost and expand the scope of its utility, thus applying it to the regional paper mills to be built in the future.
