The custom related to the matrimony vine in Kyongsong is a custom developed by the locals in the Sungam area of Kyongsong County, North Hamgyong Province, as they grow the matrimony vine and use its fruits.
The matrimony vine cultivation in the DPRK originated in the Sungam area of Kyongsong County.
The Sungam matrimony vine is of high pharmacological, edible and ornamental values. It is unknown when the matrimony vine began to be cultivated in the Kyongsong area, but old documents tell that it was raised before the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).
The popularity of the Sungam matrimony vine is attributable to the area’s physiographical conditions favourable for the plant’s growth.
From olden times the area has been known as a good place to live in for its beautiful mountains and clear streams. The fruit of the matrimony vine in the area is in great demand as it is incomparably superior to that of the species in other areas in terms of taste and nutritive and medicinal values.
The Kyongsong matrimony vine custom is about planting and cultivation of the vine and gathering, drying, sorting, storing and using of its fruit.
The fruit with various kinds of health-promoting elements is used in the production of traditional Koryo medicines, foods and cosmetics.
In addition, it is used for making dishes such as seasoned soybean curd mixed with matrimony vine fruits and panbroiled chicken mixed with matrimony vine fruits and walnuts.
The Kyongsong County Foodstuff Factory produces peppered paste, jelly, cake and liquor made of the fruits as its specialities and famous goods.
The custom was inscribed on the local intangible cultural heritage list last August.
