Spokesperson for Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly condemned and rejected the remarks of a U.S. State Department spokesperson who supported the comments of the American Institute in Taiwan claiming that the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation and other documents “did not determine Taiwan’s ultimate political status.”
The restoration of Taiwan to China is an important part of the outcomes of WWII victory and post-war international order, said the spokesperson. He disclosed that the Cairo Declaration issued in 1943 stipulates clearly that all the territories Japan has stolen from the Chinese, such as Taiwan, shall be restored to China and that the Potsdam Proclamation published in 1945 stipulates that the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out.
He continued as follows:
In 1945, Japan signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, pledging to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration in good faith. These instruments with legal effect under international law have all clearly affirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
Saying that the U.S. should not distort history, he urged that any acts abetting and aiding “Taiwan independence” in any form and interfering in China’s internal affairs should be stopped.
