The diplomatic ties between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Soviet Union was established on October 12, 1948. This was the first diplomatic relations established by our country and it became a firm guarantee for further consolidation and steady development of the bonds of friendship between the peoples of the DPRK and Russia closely united in blood and comradeship during the anti-Japanese war.

After the founding of the DPRK, President Kim Il Sung gave top priority to developing external relations with socialist countries and saw to it that our country establishes the first diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. He also paid the first official goodwill visit to the Soviet Union from February to April 1949 and signed the Agreement on Economic and Cultural Cooperation, the first inter-governmental agreement between the two countries.

During his lifetime, President Kim Il Sung paid dozens of visits to the Soviet Union and actively conducted multi-faceted and mutually beneficial exchanges and cooperation throughout various domains, thus allowing the bilateral friendship to develop in a steady and constructive manner in the mutual interests and as required by the times.

With the beginning of the new century, the friendly relations between the DPRK and Russia entered a new stage of development in line with the demands of the ever-changing international situation.

Chairman Kim Jong Il always paid deep attention to the development of the DPRK-Russia relations. He paid 3 visits to the Russian Federation including the one in August 2001 which resulted in the adoption of joint documents for ensuring peace and security in the Asia-Pacific and beyond, bringing prosperity to the two countries, and further developing equitable and mutually beneficial cooperation. This opened up bright prospects for further strengthening the traditional bonds of friendship between the two peoples and enhancing the friendly relations.

The friendly relations between the DPRK and Russia have stood the test of time and advanced along the road of friendship, unity and good-neighborly relations since they took the first step of militant friendship and comradely cooperation thanks to the preceding leaders. These relations have now greeted a great heyday under the wise leadership of respected Comrade Kim Jong Un .

In June 2024, in the limelight of the world, Comrade Kim Jong Un and President Comrade Putin signed the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in Pyongyang. The treaty that will go down in the history of development of the DPRK-Russia relations elevated the bilateral relations onto a new higher level of alliance.

Under the strategic guidance of the top leaders of the DPRK and Russia, the two countries are now advancing with conviction towards attaining the common ideals and goals while expanding and developing the bilateral relations in a multi-faceted way and maintaining close mutual cooperation in regional and international issues.

The DPRK-Russia relations was forged and has been elevated to that of genuine comradeship and alliance amidst the trials and challenges of history, and it is the firm commitment of the government of the DPRK to vigorously carry on these relations to a heyday of comprehensive prosperity.
