In recent years the DPRK has been successful in its irrigation efforts.
Amid a nationwide irrigation drive, the project for desalinating Lake Kangnyong, the Chongchon River-Phyongnam irrigation waterway project and the Hwangju Kindung waterway project were completed in a matter of three years, with hundreds of thousands of hectares of paddy and dry fields brought under irrigation.
The completion of the irrigation system has resulted in a boost in yields.
The national grain production target was overfulfilled both in 2023 and 2024, and this year’s prospects are optimistic.
This year the area of wheat cultivation has increased by more than 33 000 hectares as against last year, and the production target was overfulfilled by more than 20 percent.
Previously, the farms in Kangnyong County, South Hwanghae Province, suffered from water shortage. Supplied with water from the desalinated Lake Kangnyong, however, they could raise the output of wheat and barley more than two or three times per hectare.
With the completed project for repairing the Miru Plain waterway in North Hwanghae Province, the farms in the plain increased the yields of wheat as the main crop by more than one ton per hectare. In particular, the construction of the Hwangju Kindung waterway has resulted in a 150 percent fulfilment of the early crops production plan in Hwangju County.
The Chongchon River-Phyongnam waterway has been newly built and the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong waterway and the Phyongnam waterway have undergone a large-scale repair, promising higher yields than last year in South Phyongan Province.
North Phyongan Province has carried out repair and expansion of the waterway sections running tens of kilometres and built structures at tens of points, and pushed ahead with the repair of waterway from the Maebong Reservoir to the Honggondo Tideland, thus laying a foundation for ensuring safe paddy farming.
Thanks to the irrigation efforts, Kumya and Hamju counties in South Hamgyong Province are likely to hit their grain production targets, and more than 20 farms in Kumya County are sure of an increase of more than one ton in per hectare yield.
Dry fields have been turned back into paddy ones to boost rice farming in North Hamgyong Province, Kangwon Province, North Phyongan Province, Nampho Municipality and other parts of the country.
