One early evening in August 2009, when the midday heat was still felt, Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the Pothonggang Shop newly built in the capital city of Pyongyang.
Looking round the counters full of goods, he was amused all the way to make it possible to supply the people with delicious fruits and processed meat products.
He stopped after making the rounds of the processed meat products counter on the second floor. He gave another look at the staircase in the shop and asked if there was an elevator.
An official told him that an elevator was not designed from the beginning as the shop is a two-storey building.
Upon hearing his remarks, Kim Jong Il said: This is a shop for the people. So it is needed to install an elevator. Old people may find it difficult to walk onto the second floor. There is no problem for young people but old people and women may feel inconvenient when they walk up and down the stairs while shopping.
Before leaving, he earnestly asked the officials to install an elevator before opening the shop, however tight the schedule was before opening.
Though the staircase with 28 stairs was not high, he was concerned about the little inconvenience it might cause to the people. Later an elevator was installed in the two-storey shop.
