Remarkable successes have been achieved in the educational sector over the past five years since the Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The educational structure of the country as a whole has been reformed, and educational contents and methods improved in such a way as to give advanced education to students. Positive efforts have been made to strengthen the material foundations for education, with measures taken to raise the public interest in education.
The overall educational structure has been reshaped as the general education sector allows the students to choose their courses as suited to the economic and geographical features of their localities and according to their gifts and aptitudes and major universities like Kim Il Sung University have adopted a marks-based system in every course.
The second programme for the universal 12-year compulsory education has been amended and supplemented and heuristic, exploratory and discussion-oriented teaching methods and different advanced extracurricular approaches have been created in the general education sector.
The higher education sector has switched to introducing research-oriented teaching and learning methods to raise the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching.
A fundamental change has also taken place in the efforts to cement the material and technical foundations for education.
The Academy of Pedagogical Science was newly built as an educational science research centre. University of Sciences and many other universities laid more modern foundations for experiment and practice, and the educational sector established an exclusive network as well as a nationwide educational information system.
Lots of schools, branch schools and kindergartens have been newly built or renovated nationwide, with a number of construction projects completed last year, including the inauguration of Jonjin Senior Middle School in Rangnang District as an integrated school.
Amid the improvement in the educational environment in the rural areas, tangible progress has been made in narrowing the gap in educational levels between the capital and regions and between towns and the countryside.
