The Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences has reassessed the diversity of waterbird species in major wetlands across the DPRK in the wintering period.
To this end, a field survey was conducted to identify waterbird species that make wintering stopovers in over 70 wetlands distributed along the east and west coasts and in inland areas, including the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve and the Kumya Migratory Bird Reserve, both Ramsar sites, and other reserves of national significance such as the Kwangpho Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve and the Tongjongho Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve. The survey was also designed to reassess the waterbird population.
At least 22 000 waterbirds of 50-odd species were observed during the survey.
Among them are globally endangered species like Manchurian crane, Anser cygnoides , and Clangula hyemalis , and vulnerable species such as Aythya ferina , Podiceps grisegena and Grus monachal .
The survey showed that wintering waterbirds thrived in terms of species and population in the wetlands on the west coast including the Taedong and Chongchon estuaries, as compared with the east coastal wetlands. However, the species and population of the waterbirds in the wetlands on the east and west coasts have decreased considerably against the past.
Experts believe that this is attributable to climate change which gives rise to the sea water temperature and causes a change in the marine ecosystem and shortage of food for birds.
