May Day is an international holiday of the working people all over the world.
On May 1, 2006, Chairman Kim Jong Il sat together with some officials and said that it is necessary to renew the understanding of May Day.
He told that May Day originally appeared as an international holiday demonstrating the militant might and revolutionary unity of the working class in the struggle against oppression and exploitation by capital and for the rights to existence and democratic freedom, but today it cannot be simply regarded as a holiday of the working class.
Corroborating his assertion, he said as follows:
In this modern age of IT industry, when science and technology are developing at a high rate, the working class is being modelled on intellectuals as their labour gets technological and intellectual beyond comparison with the bygone days. With a rapidly growing number of workers engaged in mental labour, both workers and intellectuals are belonging to the working people engaged in technical and mental labour. Given these changed circumstances of the times and actual conditions, there is no need to dogmatically take May Day merely as an international holiday of the working class.
Hearing his convincing explanation and logic that give a definite idea of the change in the position of the working class and the social and class relations, the officials came to renew their understanding of the working class in the IT age as against that in the era of machine-based industry.
He added: From this Juche-oriented viewpoint, we need to enjoy May Day as a holiday of the working people all over the world. The term “working people” refer to workers, farmers and intellectuals as well. Our Party is a mass party of the working people organized with the progressive elements of workers, farmers and intellectuals. The theoretical magazine of our Party is called Kulloja (working people), so we’d better call May Day a holiday of the working people in conformity with the revolutionary and mass characters of our Party.
Every year May Day is broadly celebrated across the DPRK by the working population who are making efforts to play their part in achieving national prosperity.
