In April, a project for overhauling the structures of the waterway running from Thaechon Power Station No. 5 to Unjon, Jongju and Kwaksan and a project for building waterway structures in Sokhwa, Aedo and Ilhae tidelands were completed.
Their completion has remarkably increased the water-passing capacity, providing a guarantee for supplying enough water to irrigate the farm fields covering an area of well over 10 000 hectares in several cities and counties of North Phyongan Province and to the tidelands to be reclaimed.
In the past, irrigation projects including the Paengma-Cholsan waterway and Miru Plain waterway were carried out in the DPRK, making a great contribution to the agricultural production.
The Fourth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea in December 2021 set forth the tasks for substantially pushing ahead with the irrigation projects, including the issue of working out a yearly plan to readjust and reinforce the overall irrigation system, the issue of prioritizing the projects in the areas prone to drought and flooding, and the issue of dredging medium and small rivers, repairing embankments and building dykes in a qualitative way.
The Seventh Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the WPK also stressed the important tasks to be fulfilled in carrying out the irrigation construction, improving medium and small rivers and reinforcing dykes, and the principles to be adhered to in the construction.
As a result, the projects for desalinating Lake Kangnyong and building the Chongchon River-Phyongnam irrigation waterway and the Hwangju Kindung waterway were completed under the concern of the Party and the state, with hundreds of thousands of hectares of paddy and dry fields brought under irrigation.
Last year over 1 300 pumping stations and 1 100 irrigation structures were built and overhauled and more than 17 000 kilometres of waterways were repaired amid the ongoing dynamic work to consolidate the foundation of the agricultural irrigation, thereby completing irrigation projects for more than 160 000 hectares of paddy fields and converting over 3 300 hectares of non-paddy fields into paddy ones.
