Jonwi Street is located in the Sopho area of Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.
In December 2022, when the task for the second year of the 50 000-flat project in the capital set forth by the Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in January 2021 was proceeding apace, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said that it was quite possible to push the capital city construction on a larger scale as experience in construction had been accumulated and the well-regulated work system put in place, adding that it was needed to build a new street in the Sopho area in addition to the second-stage 10 000-flat project in the Hwasong area.
He entrusted this uphill project to the Socialist Patriotic Youth League and the Paektusan Hero Youth Shock Brigade.
Delivering a speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new street in February 2023, he called on young builders to mount a courageous struggle for the eternal prosperity of our socialist state and the capital city of Pyongyang, giving them great courage. He named the street Jonwi Street and ensured that state measures were taken to give precedence and assistance to the project.
Therefore, the construction project for some 4 100 flats was launched together with the projects for the second-stage 10 000-flat construction in the Hwasong area and the Kangdong Combined Greenhouse Farm which were already underway.
Jonwi Street inaugurated in May 2024 boasts a group of gorgeous skyscrapers such as 60- and 40-storey apartment buildings standing side by side with the landmark 80-storey tower building at the centre and flats and neighbourhood-serving amenities lining up along the road. The flats in the street were provided to working people free of charge.
