Among the top ten DPRK players of 2025 is Hong Jin Gyong, honoured with the title of the People’s Athlete, from the South Hwanghae Provincial Taekwon-Do Team.
Born in Pongchon County, South Hwanghae Province, Hong liked sports in her childhood and began to practise Taekwon-Do at a hobby group of the county children’s hall when she attended primary school.
Hong was enrolled at the provincial team in which she made strenuous efforts to improve her skills.
She worked to strengthen her capacity for punching while developing a variety of attacking skills based on a combination of hands and feet. She acquitted herself well at domestic tournaments.
She won six medals including three golds at the 22nd Taekwon-Do World Championships in 2023, in which she performed movements with high degrees of difficulty such as jump-and-turnaround kick.
The following year she garnered six medals including five golds at the 10th Asian Taekwon-Do Championships, bringing glory home.
Unfortunately, however, she was badly injured while in training in the run-up to the 23rd Taekwon-Do World Championships. This did not prevent her from redoubling efforts. She overpowered all rivals to retain her title at the championships.
She put on a good show in the women’s +77kg individual sparring, catching the eyes of experts and spectators. She topped the rankings in the women’s individual power demonstration.
She snatched seven medals including six golds, plus an individual technical award, at the championships.
Hong is still engrossed in training with an eye to higher goal.
