West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

The history of DPRK-Vietnam friendly relations is based on comradeship between President Kim Il Sung and President Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh had revered Kim Il Sung as the peerlessly great man and outstanding leader of the world revolution. He visited the DPRK in July Juche 46(1957) and requested Kim Il Sung to visit Vietnam. And the prime minister of Vietnam sent a personal letter of invitation the next year.

Kim Il Sung visited Vietnam from November 28 to December 2, 1958. During the visit, he encouraged the Vietnamese people in the struggle for building socialism and gave correct answers to the questions arising in it.

Ho Chi Minh expressed deep admiration at his foresight and wisdom, stressing that he is not only the great leader of the Korean people but also the closest friend of the Vietnamese people.

With noble international obligation, Kim Il Sung rendered great support and encouragement to the Vietnamese people in political, economic, military and all other aspects when they faced ordeals, and he continued to render unsparing assistance to Vietnam afterwards.

In his lifetime he received more than 60 Vietnamese delegations and gave them precious teachings.

Chairman Kim Jong Il paid deep attention to the development of friendly relations with Vietnam and met the general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam on a visit to the DPRK in October 2007.

The friendly and cooperative relations between the two parties and two countries, provided and developed by the peerlessly great men, are now growing stronger thanks to Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un .

His recent official goodwill visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is an important event to be recorded as a shining chapter in the history of friendship between the two countries.

The peerlessly great persons’ feats for the development of DPRK-Vietnam friendly relations will shine long through centuries and generations.
