The Pyongyang Indoor Stadium is situated in Chollima Street, one of the main trunk streets, on the banks of the Pothong River in Pyongyang, capital city of the DPRK.
Sustaining modern architectural style, it was inaugurated on April 8, Juche 62 (1973) true to the grand plan of President Kim Il Sung.
He gave spot guidance to choose its site and indicate that it should be built into a comprehensive stadium to hold not only national and international games of sports events but also a grand national meeting, clarifying in detail its formation and ways of construction.
He had all the problems arising in its building solved with parental affection, so that its project was completed within a year, and he named it Pyongyang Indoor Stadium.
The stadium is also associated with ennobling loyalty of Chairman Kim Jong Il who wisely led its construction by visiting its site on several occasions and solving problems, so as to erect it as a monumental structure in the era of the Workers’ Party true to the noble intention of the President.
Under the energetic leadership of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un it was rebuilt modernly and its reopening ceremony was held on October 3, Juche 102 (2013).
Over 20 000-seater stadium, it can hold 18-event sports games simultaneously on its floor.
Equipped with dual illumination system, it can ensure luminous intensity differently in sports games and meetings.
On one side of the wide floor, there is a stage which is used as a platform in mass rally and meeting and as an auditorium in sports game.
It has also rooms for training, rest, shower, sauna, coaches and bedrooms for athletes, and service facilities for spectators including shop, snack bar and restaurant.
