The campaign of August 3 consumer goods production is now going full steam ahead in the DPRK.
This movement to produce a wide variety of daily necessities needed for people’s livelihood improvement by enlisting the creative initiative of the masses was initiated by and developed under the leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Il .
On August 3, Juche 73 (1984), he visited the Pyongyang municipal exhibition hall of light industry goods. On display there were products made with various kinds of scraps and idle materials by employees of daily necessities workshops at industrial establishments and housewives’ workteams in the capital city of Pyongyang.
After looking round more than 20 000 exhibits one by one for hours, he expressed satisfaction over the fact that all of them were made in various kinds and of effective use. Noting that if districts and counties set up direct sales shops and properly run them, they would give a great help to improving the people’s standard of living, he specified the ways to this end.
This marked the beginning of the history of this mass movement. In a year after its start, many daily necessities workshops, workteams, housewives’ workteams and cooperatives were formed in factories, enterprises and several other institutions across the country. A variety of articles for daily use made with locally-available raw materials, by-products and waste materials without huge investments from the state began to be called the August 3 consumer goods among people and used by them.
Industrial establishments in light industry and other sectors of the national economy produced various sorts of grassworks, fibre and plastic goods, ornaments, daily necessities and household articles with idle materials, thereby rendering active services to improving the people’s living standards.
A large number of housewives’ workteams and sideline workteams throughout the country mass-produced such consumer goods as small articles for daily use, kitchen utensils, craftworks, children’s clothes and toys as suited to the people’s demands and inclinations by recycling and assorting scraps and idle materials from factories and enterprises.
A nationwide campaign for production of the August 3 consumer goods is gaining momentum, amid the brisk recycling campaign to create larger amounts of material wealth in reliance upon locally-available resources and technology.
