Ever-worsening Status of Diplomatic Confrontation

Date: 12/05/2022 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

The recent all-out confrontation between Russia and the U.S.-led Western forces, started from the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, flares up into the international organizations, evoking apprehension and concern of the international society.

Its typical example is the resolution adopted by UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) at the instigation of the U.S. and the West during the special session of its General Assembly on April 27, which was on suspension of Russia’s membership to the organization, claiming that Russia’s military operation against Ukraine constitutes the breach of UN Charter and the statute of the organization.

Russian representative to the UNWTO condemned that the issue of security and territorial integrity is not the one to be dealt by UNWTO, and discussion of suspension of membership of its member state by making an issue out of its internal and external policy itself constitutes a palpable discriminatory policy of the organization, and he walked out of the meeting place after informing of his country’s decision to withdraw from the organization.

Prior to this, Russian foreign ministry issued a statement that it is withdrawing from the organization as the UNWTO HQ gives a tacit approval to politicization of the organization in its activities and supports its discriminatory acts against Russia.

The U.S. and the West are imposing the toughest ever sanctions and pressure upon Russia, taking advantage of the Ukrainian crisis. In tandem with this, they railroaded a resolution on suspending the membership of Russia to the UN Human Rights Council at UNGA in early April with sinister intention to completely isolate Russia in the international arena. They are now raising their voices that Russia should be expelled from UNSC, G20 and UNWTO respectively.

They even vie with each another to expel more than 400 Russian diplomats working in overseas missions, inciting anti-Russia confrontational mania.

Russia, on its part, announced a federal law on taking countermeasures against those who are involved in infringement of rights and freedom of Russian citizens, and it is now taking countermeasures against the Western countries that have expelled Russian diplomats by expelling the relevant number of their diplomats.

The world media are commenting that the anti-Russia moves of the U.S. and the West constitute acts of unilateralism undermining the international law and multilateral order, and that many member states of the international community, though they are really not in favor of the “expulsion of Russia”, follow the line of the U.S. and the West or keep “silence” under their pressure.

The spokesperson for the UN Secretary General sounded a note of warning that the “expulsion of Russia” may serve as a high-risk precedent that would do more harm than good, further disintegrating the international society.

Many experts on international affairs contend that the U.S. and the Western attempts at disgracing and isolating Russia before the whole world are anachronistic acts, and that what should be done by the international organizations under the current circumstances of ever-worsening Ukrainian crisis is the enhancement of solidarity and collaboration rather than antagonism and enmity.

As was clearly shown by the above facts, if the U.S. and the West continue to resort to their vile anti-Russia isolation and pressure policy by making use of the Ukrainian crisis, this will lead to inviting tougher response from Russia.
