One day in late February 1933, General Kim Il Sung dropped in at the barracks of the first Wangqing company whose members were reviewing their political lessons by lamp light after finishing supper.
Receiving the salute from the guerrillas, he asked them their names, ages and family circumstance and particular stories about their joining the guerrilla army one by one and acquainted himself with their study.
Regrettably, however, most of them were illiterate.
He took in the situation and said that the guerrillas should become organizers, information workers and educators who would inspire the people to fight for the victory of the revolution, but if they did not know even how to read and write, they could not teach the masses. And he distributed papers he had brought with him to them.
Then he taught them how to bind a book.
And he wrote their names one by one on the cover of each book with his fountain pen.
From the following day the guerrillas spread sand on the ground and practised writing Korean alphabets.
They learned while having meals and stuck papers written with Korean alphabets and multiplication table on the backpacks of fellow guerrillas in front of them when they marched to learn them by heart by muttering on the way.
There is a saying that a person who taught even one letter is regarded as a benefactor for life.
The anti-Japanese guerrillas trusted and followed the General, who helped them take the first step of learning and led them along step by step to train them as heroes and fighters, as the Sun of the nation and remained faithful to his ideas and leadership to the last moments of their lives.
