February 2 is World Wetlands Day.
Wetland, which is called the “infrastructure” of the earth, plays an important role in reducing natural disasters which produce fatal effects on the existence and activities of man–in water storage, prevention of soil erosion, management of flooding, water purification and provision and outflow of underground water, and other socio-economic development.
Especially, wetland is a cradle of biodiversity as it provides basic living conditions for many fauna and flora inhabiting in it.
Out of in-depth understanding that wetland is an ecosystem indispensable to the promotion of wellbeing of man and protection of biodiversity, the international community appeals to all countries to turn out in the work of protecting it.
The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day is the “Wetlands Action for People and Nature.”
In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea where wetlands cover a considerable area, it puts great efforts into their protection.
The Zoology Research Institute and the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences and other scientific research institutes conducted diversified activities for protecting wetlands, including the survey of 33 wetlands and migratory birds-related reserves such as Mundok Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve and Kumya Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve.
In the course of intensifying research to increase new reserves, they confirmed important areas of biodiversity and made a design of nature reserve network, thus laying a scientific foundation for protecting biodiversity.
Meanwhile, different information activities are being intensified to improve the people’s understanding of ecosystem of migratory (wetland) reserves and animals and plants through mass media.
