One September day in Juche 36 (1947), two years after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese military occupation, President Kim Il Sung visited the then Songjin Steel Plant located on the east coast and looked round an induction furnace workshop.
The workshop had been built by the Japanese imperialists to plunder much more steel from the country with less cost. Many Koreans had lost their lives by an electric shock.
Officials of the steel plant dissuaded him from going to the workshop, but he unhesitatingly stepped into it.
Exposing the viciousness of the Japanese imperialists who turned the workshop into a slave labour site, he said as follows: Before the country’s liberation our workers were compelled to work at the dangerous induction furnace even at the cost of their lives as they were deprived of their country. Now that the country has been liberated and the workers have become its masters, why should we leave them work at such a dangerous place? Steel is also needed for the masses of workers. No matter how precious steel is, the workers’ lives can never be bartered for it. It would be alright if little steel may be produced.
Then, he resolutely ordered officials to blow up the furnace which was filled with Korean workers’ grudge.
Later, the induction furnace workshop disappeared without any trace.
This story about Kim Il Sung ’s affection for the workers is still told as a legend.
