Choe Song Il, section chief at the Pyongyang Municipal Ophthalmic Hospital, has recently introduced a new method to the glaucoma surgery by means of a gonioscope, having success in treatment.
A graduate from Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences, he has worked at the hospital since 2007. With high credentials and devotion, he has treated many cases with eye diseases.
Once he came across a young case who was complaining of a burning pain in her eyes. He found that the child contracted glaucoma. As one of incurable diseases, glaucoma gives acute pain to cases and may lead to permanent vision loss. It was most likely to recur after surgery.
Work commitments and devotion made him decide on the surgery of the child as young as his own.
While studying materials about the surgery, he found a solution from the minimum infiltration glaucoma surgery, which required a four-sided gonioscope as a medical instrument for examining and treating glaucoma.
A 61 degree or 62 degree four-sided gonioscope that is available to date is globally recognized as an indispensable tool for glaucoma surgery as it helps ensure precise examination and effective and simple medical operation.
Choe and his research team made an in-depth study of latest documents before setting themselves to manufacture a four-sided gonioscope. With the help of experts, he ascertained each of optimal technical specifications, and applied up-to-date processing techniques to its manufacture with a new angle.
Unlike the previous ones, the new instrument was convenient in use and prompt and precise in examination while generating less infiltration in surgery and reducing physical burden on patients by far in its clinical application.
With this tool, he brought fresh hope to the child and many other cases.
According to him, the tool is of high clinical significance as it helps treat closed glaucoma and open types with a high recurrence.
His instrument won the first prize at the national exhibition of sci-tech achievements of the public health sector in November last year.
In addition, he has developed a cornea depressor, V-shaped machine for glaucoma surgery, and other medical appliances conducive to the development of the country’s medical sciences.
