Every year, older persons across the country play such amusement games as janggi (Korean chess), yut -game and badminton and hold an angling contest amid the interest of fans on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons and other anniversaries.
A spring sports competition of the aged took place at Badminton Gymnasium on Chongchun Street in Mangyongdae District in the capital city of Pyongyang between April 27 and 29.
An old manhogged the limelight of the spectators. He was Kim Ja Hyon living in Kyonghung-dong in Pothonggang District. In the preliminary matches he scored points in succession with actions as prompt as those of young people and refined skills such as push in the forward line and light strike.
Spectators were all the more wide-eyed with the fact that he was 80 years old.
To his regret, he failed to advance into the finals, but he received a standing ovation.
The sponsor organization awarded him a special individual prize.
After the game, when he was asked if it was not easy for him to play the game for his advanced age, he said he felt as if he had gained his youthful vigor after playing.
He said he has taken part in the spring sports competition of the aged for several years, an annual event held under the close concern of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the state.
Reading and writing are his hobbies, so he writes literary works dealing with the life of older persons who spend their remaining years happily,thanks to the benefits of the benevolent socialist system.
“We, the aged, are leading a happy life in good health in the era of the Workers’ Party of Korea,” says Kim Ja Hyon.
