West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

February 21 is the “International Mother Language Day”.

30 th session of General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization held in November 1999 has decided on proclaiming February 21 as “International Mother Language Day” with a view to preserving the world languages, accelerating sustainable development of diverse cultures and promoting mutual understanding among the people of different countries.

Many countries including Russia, India, Bangladesh and Uganda are now taking positive measures to protect and develop their mother language; they encourage their citizens and younger generation to daily use their mother language with pride and urge the government officials to make speeches in their mother language at the external events of national importance.

In the DPRK as well, the work is well under way from a long time ago to protect and develop the Korean Language permeated with wisdom and talents of the nation under the wise leadership of the peerless great men.

The Korean language, one of the excellent cultural heritages created by the Korean nation, has a rich pronunciation, beautiful sound, diversified expressions and well-organized grammar. As such, one can pronounce any foreign language freely and express even complicated and delicate emotion clearly and amply with it.

Therefore, many renowned linguists of the world spare no praise for superiority of the Korean language, saying that it has a special structure which cannot be compared to any other languages in the world, it is easy and simple to learn, it has abundant forms of expression, if we evaluate the level of development stage of the national culture with words and letters, the DPRK will rank first among the superior national cultures of the world.

Today, under the wise leadership of respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , the Korean language is being developed and enriched into more refined and superior one that conforms with the spirit of the present era and the ideological sentiment of our people.

The Law on National Symbols and the Law of the Protection of the Cultured Pyongyang Dialect which were adopted last year encapsulate the firm will of our Party and the state to protect the Korean language, the excellent cultural heritage created by our nation, and to develop and enrich it as required by the present era.

Our Republic, in the future, too, will make active efforts to protect and develop the Korean language, our mother tongue, like many other countries in the world that are trying to protect and develop their own vernacular languages.
