Kim Hyok Chon, PhD and department chief at the Power-driven Machine Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, is recognized as one of the prestigious scientists in the DPRK. He was nominated as one of the best scientists and technicians of 2023.
Many call him a “scientist with light always in his mind” and an “indispensable scientist in power generation” as a token of their love and respect for him and in recognition of his tangible contribution to solving technical issues related to raising turbine output at thermal power stations for more than 30 years.
In recent years alone he has helped thermal power stations set up a condenser cooling water supply system fed by a jet pump without building an exclusive pumping station or a pumping tower that demands a lot of time, labour and fund. Such a technological breakthrough makes it possible to supply the condenser cooling water to steam turbines and raise their output.
As a result, thermal power stations can increase the turbine output to over tens of thousands of kilowatts even in summer as compared to the previous period.
Besides, he was instrumental in developing and introducing the technologies to augment condenser vacuum through direct spray of additional water and raise the turbine output by supplementing steam temperature to enhance the working safety of labyrinth packing, which have brought considerable profits to the country.
Scores of his research findings including “water level adjuster for high pressure heater for 200MW steam turbine” and “vacuum maker by water spray” have been registered as national sci-tech achievements in recognition of their tangible contribution to the development of the country’s power industry.
Kim Hyok Chon has won the February 16 Science and Technology Prize, aka science and technology innovation prize.
