Salvelinus malma chonjiensis , a freshwater fish of trout family, inhabits Lake Chon on top of Mt Paektu 2 750 metres above sea level, the most celebrated mountain of the DPRK.
Originally, there were no fish except some lower aquatic organisms at Lake Chon as its water is clear and cold.
In July Juche 49 (1960), local ichthyologists began to move chars in Tuman and Amnok rivers and release them to the lake so that they could be adapted and acclimatized to the climatic and hydrologic conditions and ecological environment peculiar to the caldera lake. Such effort resulted in a lake char of a new ecotype.
The lake char is similar to the river char in appearance, but bigger than the latter. It is mostly 40-50 centimetres long and over 85 centimetres at maximum.
With a large head, protruding mouth and small eyes, the lake char dives 10-20 metres deep in the daytime and comes up at night to forage for food. Its feeding activities get intense in July and August, when plants flower and bear fruit and insects thrive on the lakeside, and they continue in winter as the water temperature remains at 4℃. With egg laying starting in mid-September, it digs a hollow on the pumice sand to spawn 600-700 eggs, over 1 000 at maximum.
Salvelinus malma chonjiensis is of academic significance as it lives at the southernmost and highest place of Eurasia in view of the distribution of the same species.
It is protected as a natural monument of the DPRK.
