O Mother Party (lyrics by Kim Jae Hwa and music by Ri Myon Sang) is the first song which portrays the Workers’ Party of Korea as the mother.
A lyric song created in Juche 53 (1964), it sings of the boundless trust of the Korean people in the Party founded and led by President Kim Il Sung and their ennobling ideological feeling for the Party.
It describes the Party as the benevolent mother, as it brings only infinite happiness, hope, victory and glory to the Korean people. And it emotionally represents their determination to remain faithful to the Party’s appeal and unhesitatingly sacrifice themselves for it with simple words and through varied techniques like repetition and metaphor. Its melody of two-part form is featured by bright and sublime cadence.
As soon as it was created, the song captured the hearts of all the Korean people.
Among them were a young machine operator who had been newly admitted to the Party and an old intellectual who had lived a life full of ups and downs.
Han Ung Bin, a Kim Il Sung Prize winner and a writer who was born on October 10, 1945, the founding day of the Party, wrote in his autobiography:
“But for the Workers’ Party of Korea which identifies our latent talents and brings them into full bloom, my success would be inconceivable. Looking back upon my past, I realize how the Party has taken care of us since the days we were born, guiding us in every step of life. A mother takes utmost care of her children to the last moments of her life. The strength and pride of our people originate from the embrace.”
The Party’s affection as warm as the sun and as deep as the sea reaches everyone on this land.
That’s why the Korean people cherish it deep in mind and liken it to the benevolent mother who is dearest to them.
The embrace that cares for all the people and brings them up into excellent persons as a mother would do all her children—this is the motherly Party.
One day in February 1965, Comrade Kim Jong Il said to officials: The people have entrusted our Party with everything and they call our Party a motherly party. The term motherly Party implies their deep trust in our Party as well as their enormous expectations from it to look after their future destiny.
Representing the lyric songs in the 1960s, the song is still widely sung among the Korean people.
