Achieving firm unity and cohesion of the revolutionary ranks has been the theory advocated by the Workers' Party of Korea since its initial days, as well as an important revolutionary undertaking to which Comrade Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) paid close attention throughout his life.
In the 1920s when he started to engage in the revolutionary activities, Koreans living in Kalun, China, formed various factions according to their origin, which created distrust among them.
The severe factional prejudice resulted in frequent quarrels.
Kim Il Sung approached this situation with a heavy heart. One evening he went to the village where factional prejudice was said to be the most evident. At the news that he was to give a lecture, all people of the village gathered at the venue of the lecture. After exchanging greetings with them, he acquainted himself with the farming in the year and their living and started the lecture. When he turned the topic to the issue of prejudice and conflict among Koreans in the Kalun area, their faces became gloomy.
Looking round them, he said that the feudal rulers had been engrossed in factional strife divided into this group and that, ruining the country in the long run. He continued that those who were claiming that they were engaged in the independence movement were making a mess of the movement as they were approaching people with regional prejudice.
Adding that no one who truly wanted national independence should follow this view based on regional prejudice, he said:
In order to defeat the Japanese imperialists and win the country back, our people should unite firmly with one mind and one will, not opposing one another as now.
Underscoring the need to form a revolutionary organization and unite around it in order to achieve unity, he gave a vivid account of the fact that the organizations of peasants, young people, women and boys had been formed and were active in Jilin, Fusong and rural villages in the surrounding area.
Listening to him, the villagers keenly realized that they could win their country back only when they turned out courageously in the struggle against the Japanese imperialists, rallied closely around revolutionary organizations.
