In 2012 the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea instituted November 16 as the Mother’s Day and a national holiday.
That day in 1961 Comrade Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) delivered a historic speech titled “The Duty of Mothers in the Education of Children” at the first national conference of mothers.
It was in November 2012 that the fourth conference of mothers was held.
The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , in acknowledgement of the efforts mothers had devoted to the country and people, society and the collective, ensured that the fourth conference was organized in a grand way marking the first Mother’s Day.
One day in September that year he visited a research institute. Seeing beautiful flowers in full bloom at the institute, he said: The state designated the Mother’s Day; mothers would be pleased to be presented with flowers on the day.
One day in November in the run-up to the Mother’s Day he said to senior officials of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea that it was necessary to make cards of congratulations well and sell them to people on the occasion of the Mother’s Day.
Under his meticulous care, the Fourth National Conference of Mothers was held amid the blessings of all the people across the country, bringing together mothers with many children, women who adopted orphans and brought them up admirably, wives of the Korean People’s Army officers, meritorious women, officials and other exemplary women.
Among those attending the conference were nursing mothers who came up with their babies. A nursery was set up for them to take care of their babies during the conference, which was something unprecedented in history.
Kim Jong Un ensured that the delegates to the conference were awarded the title of Labour Hero and other high national commendations and all the participants were presented with gifts. He also had photographs taken with them.
At the Fifth National Conference of Mothers in December last year 20 women were awarded the newly-instituted Communist Mother Honour Prize.
No love is softer, kinder and more benevolent than that of the mother.
A revolutionary also takes his first step with the help of his mother.
The Mother’s Day inculcates this truth in all the people across the country. The day is significantly celebrated every year in the country.
