Hot spring culture has been established through a long historical progress to use thermal water for relief from illness and health promotion. Diverse in kind, style and service, it embraces the whole course of medical treatment, leisure and accommodation.
Yangdok hot spring culture prevails in the DPRK.
Yangdok hot spring is a simple mineral water in Yangdok township of Yangdok County, South Phyongan Province. With its temperature being 39 to 49℃, it is of slight alkalinity. Its typical effects include emollience, resolution, promoted blood circulation and metabolism, checked gastric secretion, accelerated intestinal secretion, and relief from chronic heavy metal poisoning. The spring water is also used to treat chronic gastritis, especially that from superacidity, hyperuricemia, gout, heavy metal poisoning, silicosis, chronic eczema, impetigo, psoriasis, lichen, bone and joint diseases, aftereffects of injuries and operations, neuralgia, neuritis and sterility among others.
The Yangdok Hot Spring Resort was built in December 2019 as a comprehensive hot spring treatment facility and a multi-functional sports and cultural complex.
The resort is associated with the painstaking efforts made by the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un to make the people enjoy the most developed socialist civilization, and it also reflects the refined lifestyle of the Korean people.
Efforts are being made in the country to inherit and develop the traditional spa bath so as to promote public health and leisure activities.
Yangdok hot spring culture is part of the nation’s intangible heritage.
