Kim Su Gyong, then a fifth-year student from Tongan Primary School in Central District, Pyongyang, stood out above the rest at the national schoolchildren’s conception contest-2024 in the field of primary and secondary education.
The contest, divided into literature and science events, brought together more than 300 students who proved successful at the preceding local contests at provincial, city and county levels.
Kim Su Gyong excelled herself in the science event.
As a child, Kim began to learn the Korean language before her peers.
When she attended a nursery, she once stepped into her mother’s room carrying two picture books with her. She said to her mother she wondered why the letters in the preface of both books looked the same though she could not understand what they meant.
Her mother, taken aback, explained to her what they meant.
During her kindergarten days, Su Gyong was very fond of reading picture books and she often asked puzzling questions to her teacher and mother about things and phenomena around her.
She read a wide range of books, and had accumulated plenty of knowledge when she attended primary school. She never failed to give a satisfactory answer to her teacher’s question at class.
Back home after school, she applied what she had learned at class to make something on her own.
She designed some devices such as an animated picture projector in an original way, which earned her admiration of even teachers at a school’s conception show.
Last year she gave full play to her ingenuity at district- and city-level contests to be qualified for the national event to be held in November.
In the tight contest she extraordinarily found the volume of a table-tennis ball and solved other problems that required great intelligence, analytical judgement and ability to apply a wealth of knowledge, thus scoring high points.
When faced with a problem of using four-dimensional blocks to make a ship that can travel in maximum safety, at fast speed and to the farthest possible distance, she hit on an idea of using a thrust by the air from a balloon, and was the first to make it to the admiration of the jury and spectators.
Now she works harder to become a scientist in the future.
