One May afternoon in 1956, Comrade Kim Jong Il told the Children’s Union committee instructor of his school that the branch committee of his class the previous day had discussed organizing an expedition to the revolutionary battle sites and scenic spots during the coming summer vacation and that by revolutionary battle sites he meant those in the Mt Paektu area.
As the instructor was surprised to hear him, he said to her: Of course, it would be hard for young students to travel far, away from their homes for the first time. But they must do it. The expedition is not a snap decision but something I pondered and decided on long ago. Mt Paektu is a sacred place where the fatherly Marshal Kim Il Sung , shouldering the destiny of the nation, fought to win back the lost country. If they tour the mountain, they will harden their resolve to struggle for the sake of the country and people following the example of the Marshal.
Those days the situation in and around the DPRK was complicated due to the provocative moves of the enemy against the country, and the anti-Party, counterrevolutionary factionalists were working insidiously and in defiance of the Party to emasculate and obliterate the revolutionary traditions of Paektu.
With a keen insight into this, Kim Jong Il had decided to organize an expedition to the revolutionary battle sites in the Mt Paektu area so as to imbue students with the revolutionary traditions of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The instructor suggested that the expedition group should use a bus because most of its members were not strong enough.
Kim Jong Il said to her: As a matter of fact, it could be an option. But we intend to tour the revolutionary battle sites on foot, while cooking for ourselves. Doing this conforms to the aim of the expedition. The fatherly Marshal set out on the 250-mile journey for national liberation all alone at the tender age of 14. During the expedition we will learn his ennobling ideas and revolutionary spirit and prepare ourselves to be a new generation who will carry forward the Korean revolution on our shoulders.
In early June, a month later, the expedition group left for the revolutionary battle sites in the Mt Paektu area, with Kim Jong Il in its vanguard. As the first of its kind, the expedition was of great significance in the history of the WPK and the Korean revolution.
