The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung regarded it as his motto to believe in the people as in Heaven and was among them all his life.
It happened in the winter of 1927 when he was conducting his revolutionary activities at Yuwen Middle School in China’s Jilin. While on a performance tour during the winter vacation leading an artistic information troupe in Fusong, he was invited by the people in Dujidong.
After the first performance Cha, the eldest of the village, asked Kim Il Sung to his house, saying that it was the first time in his life that he had seen such a fine performance. He was better known as Cholli (250 miles) instead of his name because rumour had it that he used to walk 250 miles a day when he served in the volunteers’ army.
The old man said that the singing and dancing Unity Pole was very good. He then deplored the fact that all the volunteer activities had come to nothing because they had failed to join efforts, and said that Koreans should fight the Japanese in unity even if they are only three.
What old man Cha told Kim Il Sung that night made a great impression on him.
One year when the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle was at its height, Kim Il Sung told Cha Kwang Su to go and work at a rural village.
He went on: We should not draw distinctions between the city and the countryside if there are people there. What if those who are allegedly making the revolution for the proletarian masses continuously move up, leaving the masses behind? Let us go down. Let us go down among the workers and peasants.
Afterwards, Cha went deep among the people and rendered great services in promoting the process of making the masses revolutionary and laying the foundation for the anti-Japanese armed struggle.
Later, recalling these facts, Kim Il Sung wrote in his reminiscences With the Century that if he had neglected contact with the people just once and forgotten the existence of the people even for a moment, he would not have been able to maintain the pure and genuine love for the people which he formed in his teens and become a true servant of the people.
