A symposium on promoting environmentally sound management of plastic waste took place in Pyongyang on August 27 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection of the DPRK.
It drew officials and researchers from the ministries and national agencies including the National Coordinating Committee for Environment, Ministry of Land and Environment Protection and State Planning Commission and other relevant units. It was also attended by an officer of the Basel Convention Regional Centre through videoconferencing.
Officials from the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection made presentations entitled “On the long-term plan for national environment protection in the DPRK” and “On the recycling of plastic waste.” Speakers referred to the policy and legal framework of the DPRK government on the management of scrap and waste materials, stressing that addressing plastic pollution is one of the most important tasks in the effort to hand down the clean planet to the younger generation.
The officer of the BCRC introduced international activities related to the production and use of disposable plastics and the treatment of the plastic waste.
Views were shared on activities at home and abroad to prevent plastic pollution.
It was followed by panel discussions.
The symposium served as a significant opportunity for strengthening international exchanges and cooperation in preventing and minimizing generation of plastic waste and its negative impacts.
