The Korean people have created and developed a peculiar custom related with songi mushroom from Mt Chilbo in the course of picking the mushroom abundant in the mountain and using it in their dietary life.
Flourishing in Mt Chilbo, located in the area centred on Myongchon, North Hamgyong Province, the mushroom is of high nutritive value and medicinal effect.
That the mushroom is famous is because the Mt Chilbo area is blessed with 11 hot springs good for promoting human health and treating diseases and its natural, climate and geographical conditions are very favourable for the growth of the mushroom.
In autumn many local people climb the mountain to collect the mushroom. Many dishes can be made with the mushroom. It can be roasted, used in cooking rice and soup, hard-boiled, pickled and fried. The roast of fresh songi mushroom is the best of all dishes made with the mushroom.
By using the mushroom, they also make various other things like songi mushroom liquor, songi mushroom in honey and songi mushroom powder and use them in medical treatment.
The custom is about collecting, assorting, grading, using and storing the plant.
Drying and pickling are the major methods of storing it and main contents of the custom.
The locals are endeavouring to protect and propagate the mushroom, a special product of their locality, and carry forward the custom related with it from one generation into the next.
The custom was inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list in August 2025.
