A social climate of practising Taekwon-Do has been established across the DPRK.
The traditional martial art of Korea is a self-defensive one that is performed empty-handed. It is also a sports event to cultivate one’s physical strength and martial art techniques and nurture a sense of patriotism and justice, fortitude, bravery, self-confidence, self-control and modesty. Anyone can learn it irrespective of their physical condition, age, sex and place.
Everywhere in the country―all levels of educational institutions ranging from kindergarten to university, extracurricular education bases, ministries and national agencies, factories, enterprises and farms―Taekwon-Do is popular among all the population including youth and students and working people.
Taekwon-Do has become a compulsory subject in the country’s universal 12-year compulsory education, and the students are supposed to obtain first dan of Taekwon-Do by the time when they graduate from senior middle school.
Promising Taekwon-Do reserve players are trained at schools, universities and Taekwon-Do groups in schoolchildren’s palaces and halls in different parts of the country.
The working people are practising Taekwon-Do in factories, enterprises and farms according to their ages for their health and body building.
Every year the national Taekwon-Do contests including amateur Taekwon-Do practitioners contest and junior Taekwon-Do championships are held, and Taekwon-Do is included as an event in the mass-based sports contests of all levels including the capital, province, city and county.
A typical evidence for growing popularity of Taekwon-Do is the National Amateur Taekwon-Do Practitioners Contest-2025 held in August.
It brought together more than 600 amateur practitioners who were selected from Pyongyang and all provinces (municipalities) including South Phyongan Province, North Hwanghae Province, Jagang Province and Nampho. The event was held divided into pattern, basic movements, special techniques, sparring and others.
The practitioners wowed the spectators as they showed wonderful performance in team pattern, basic movements, acrobatic fortes, power breaking by hands and feet, self-defence, sparring and others.
“Even more people are participating in the contest and their technical level has risen remarkably as against last year. This made me convinced that our people are more eager to learn Taekwon-Do,” said Ham Jong Gi, department head of the Korean Taekwon-Do Committee.
