October 1 is International Day of Older Persons.
In 1990 the 45th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the implementation of the international action plan for older persons and relevant activities and decided to celebrate every October 1 as International Day of Older Persons. It also called on each nation to take concerted action on the occasion of the day in fighting against violations of the rights and interests of the elderly, improving their living security by encouraging them to participate in social and production activities and providing them with social and medical support.
In the DPRK it is one of the important policies for the state to carry responsibility for the health and living of the older people and take good care of them, systematically increasing the investment in elderly care and providing them with a civilized and happy life.
The Central Committee of the Korea Federation for the Care of the Aged is entrusted to control the elderly care in a unified way.
The adoption of the law of the DPRK on the protection of the aged provides a legal guarantee for establishing a strict system and order in elderly care, respecting the senior citizens and offering them better living conditions.
Healthcare institutions and relevant units register the elderly population without exception in the areas under their charge and conduct health checkups and treatment and preventive care on a regular basis.
Central hospitals have departments exclusively for the elderly.
Nutritious foods rich in trace elements and tonics, as well as hearing aid, glasses, walking sticks and other aid and recuperation instruments, are regularly supplied to senior citizens.
Aged people are living a happy life in the sanatoriums for war veterans and old people’s homes built in various parts of the country, enjoying benefits given by the state.
Residential areas, parks, playgrounds and other spaces are equipped with sporting and recuperation equipment for the older people.
Long-lived persons are registered with special care given to their health, and a birthday spread is sent to every centenarian.
