The emblem of the glorious Workers’ Party of Korea founded on October 10, 1945 is inscribed with a hammer, a sickle and a writing brush, symbolic of workers, peasants and intellectuals. The following story tells how it was created.
One day in October 1993 President Kim Il Sung met a foreign political figure on his visit to the DPRK.
The foreign politician, saying the emblem of the WPK contains three icons representing workers, peasants and intellectuals, asked Kim Il Sung what made him think of a writing brush for the emblem.
Kim Il Sung replied: Our Party has put forward intellectuals together with workers and peasants since the first day of its founding. Without intellectuals, it is impossible to build a new society. We have an army of intellectuals between their 30s and 60s. That’s why we are able to carry out the revolution successfully.
The hammer, sickle and writing brush in the Party’s emblem are a living proof of the extraordinary wisdom and seasoned leadership ability of the President who, in the early days of the founding of the Party, newly clarified the position and role of intellectuals in the revolution and construction and built the working-class party into a mass-based party embracing the progressive elements of all working classes and strata.
Addressing a rally held to welcome his triumphal return home after the country’s liberation on August 15, 1945, Kim Il Sung called on all to turn out to build a new Korea, those with strength giving strength, those with knowledge offering knowledge and those with money donating money. This call reflected his expectation of the intellectuals.
Today, under the leadership of the WPK, the Korean intellectuals are devoting all their wisdom and energy to stepping up the comprehensive development of socialism.
