The song O Mother Party (words by Kim Jae Hwa and music by Ri Myon Sang) is the first to sing of the Workers’ Party of Korea as the mother.
Though decades have passed since it was created in 1964, the hymn is still widely sung among the Korean people because it reflects their boundless praise for the Party and desire to trust in and follow it alone.
The first half of the 1960s witnessed great changes in the country.
For nearly 20 years since its founding, the Party had achieved immortal exploits, leading the young state and the people.
Typical examples are the building of the new Korea, victory in the Fatherland Liberation War, postwar reconstruction, agricultural cooperativization, socialist transformation of private trade and industry, enforcement of people-oriented policies like free education, and the launch of the movement for the great Chollima advance.
The changes freed the country completely from centuries-old backwardness and poverty and brought about a remarkable change in the Korean people’s life. Witnessing all this, the people keenly felt the benevolence of the Party.
The Party’s loving care and benevolence reached everywhere and everyone in the country equally. All its lines and policies were correct, its leadership was always wise, and it was always considerate and benevolent.
The happiness of the Korean people was inconceivable apart from the benevolence of the Party. The WPK which takes responsible care of the life and destiny of the people was the greatest mother in the world.
The song was created reflecting such feelings of the times.
As the WPK brings eternal happiness and hope, and victory and glory to the Korean people, the song praises it as the boundlessly benevolent motherly party. It vividly shows the Korean people’s ennobling thoughts and feelings in a plain and friendly way by means of simple poetic words, repetition, metaphors and other literary techniques.
Later, the efforts for creating hymns to the Party entered a new stage in the country, giving birth to many famous songs praising it as the mother, including The Party Is the Image of My Mother , If Our Mother Party Wishes , and The Mother Party’s Embrace .
