The Ice Rink (inaugurated in 1982) located on the banks of the picturesque Pothong River in the capital city of Pyongyang has been renovated into a multi-functional cultural and sports complex.
The standouts in renovation are a four-sided large LED screen with various display functions, a circle of narrow LED screen on the upper part of the auditorium and dozens of high-definition laser projectors.
A combination of coloured illumination and projection brings three-dimensional effects, setting off rhythmic and technical figure skating elements, such as spins and jumps.
Soft water is used to make ice, and as it freezes in a closed state unlike in the past, the ice layer is very thin. And it is more economical as it consumes less power, water and coolant.
The rink can be converted into a basketball court, volleyball court, boxing ring or stage for artistic performance in a short time so that it can offer venue for international competitions and artistic events.
It has a training gym equipped with a large ice rink for figure staking and ice hockey, surrounded by a lane for short track speed skating.
