In the DPRK the Model Agricultural Worker Honour Prize is awarded to exemplary agricultural workers for their leading role in implementing the plan of the socialist rural construction of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
According to an official of the Central Committee of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea, the prize was instituted in 1989, and thousands of people have so far won it.
This year 150 agricultural workers have been honoured with the prize.
Among them is O Yong Suk, a farmer of the Taephyong Farm in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang.
She volunteered to take charge of one hectare of low-yielding field and made ten years of painstaking efforts to turn it into a fertile land and reap high yield.
When people asked her about the secret of her success, she said that she had just worked hard, regarding her field as part of the country.
Winners unanimously say that though any country has a large population engaged in agriculture, there would be no other country but theirs which confers such a prize on farmers.
The Korean agricultural workers are provided free of charge with new houses built by the state and necessary farming materials. They lead a worthwhile life as masters of the rural rejuvenation in the new era.
