This year a research team of the Electric Power Information Institute under the Ministry of Electric Power Industry was awarded the February 16 Sci-tech Prize, the highest honour in the science and technology sector in the DPRK.
The national integrated power control system developed by them is making a tangible contribution to obtaining electricity reserves as it helps increase power production, put power supply and consumption on a scientific footing and minimize the loss of electricity in transmission.
Kim Kyong Su, head of the institute, said that the system can be called a development-oriented and innovative product, not a prototype-copying one.
The core members of the institute are promising IT technicians in their 20s or 30s.
Several years ago they launched into research work to put the national power control on an IT basis.
They focused on developing Korean-style technology, equipment and devices. In the course of this, they established a rational system and developed over 100 programs and terminal electricity technology devices, thereby completing the national integrated power control system.
One of them solved a scientific and theoretical problem arising in the security of alternated power supply system, drawing the attention of the academic circle. Another one developed an effective integrated power control system which can help improve the performance of hydropower stations. And still another made a rational scheme for minimizing the loss of electricity in transmission.
Since the national integrated power control system was born, the number of branch systems has increased to over 10, various kinds of advanced devices have been developed and the performance of the system including real-time monitoring has been further improved.
The total amount of electricity thus additionally produced and saved are reportedly equal to the one produced by some large-scale power stations.
Each of the branch systems including those of real-time collecting data and monitoring and control, of electricity geographical information, of electricity production and management and of alternated power supply is associated with the researchers’ painstaking efforts to contribute to increased production and saving of electricity.
Kim Kyong Su, who played a key role in this work, was selected as one of the national top scientists and technicians of 2024.
