The DPRK players bagged two gold medals and one silver medal at the recent ITTF Asian Para Championships 2025 in China.
In the event, which brought together more than 400 players from 18 countries and regions including the DPRK, India, Kazakhstan and Malaysia, Jon Ju Hyon and Kim Yong Rok, both with locomotive disabilities, claimed the MS6 and MS7 titles, respectively.
With good results in the group stage, Kim Yong Rok clashed with a Chinese in the MS7 semifinals. The Chinese was ranked second in the world.
Kim lost in the first and third rounds, but he won the second, fourth and fifth rounds by giving full play to his forte–service and the third ball attack tactics.
He beat his Chinese Hong Kong rival 3-1 in the final, snatching a gold medal.
The DPRK players’ successful performance struck many spectators with admiration.
A member of the championships organizing committee said that seeing the DPRK paddlers playing with high spiritual strength, he learned what the Koreans are like. His remarks were echoed by referees who said the Koreans held many spellbound and stole the show at the event.
Another member of the organizing committee said: The DPRK players have worked miracles. The Korean people are probably building theirs into a much admired country by dint of that mental strength. I hope they will be successful in future competitions.
