In the DPRK there are many families that have maintained a noble view of life of devoting themselves to the prosperity of the country through generations.
Among them is the family of Prof. Kim Ji Hyon, PhD and director of the Educational Science Institute at Kim Il Sung University. Most of his family members have been engaged in education.
It was some 30 years ago when Kim Ji Hyon took up teaching after graduating from Kim Il Sung University. But he had cherished a dream of becoming a teacher since his primary school days.
In the 1960s, his father and mother taught at the then Ryongbok Senior Middle School in Sunan District, a suburb of Pyongyang. They taught literature and maths respectively.
Early in the morning the couple used to go to work together greeted by neighbours and back home share their experience in teaching till late at night. Sometimes they left home at dawn to prepare for class. They were a source of pride and joy for young Kim Ji Hyon.
He was greatly influenced by his parents who had worked heart and soul for over four decades.
On the day when he entered Kim Il Sung University after graduating with top honours from Pyongyang Middle School No. 1, his mother gave him a fountain pen and asked him to study hard and become a good teacher. After graduation he took a teaching post and all his siblings followed suit.
He pioneered educational consultation in the DPRK, wrote some papers on educational science and reference books and trained several doctorate degree holders.
His brothers are teaching at Pyongyang Hydro-meteorological College and Rangnang College of Technology respectively.
His eldest daughter Kim Jong Song studied at the Faculty of Korean Linguistics of Kim Il Sung University and finished her postgraduate course, and became a teacher at Pyongyang Middle School No. 1 in November last year.
