PhD and associate professor Kwon Hye Yong, section chief of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Kim Chaek University of Technology, is a competent educator as well as a scientist who played a core role in pioneering and developing grounding engineering of the country.
Twenty years ago when renovation of the production line of the Taedonggang Brewery was underway, Kwon, 33-year old teacher of the university, was assigned the task of designing a grounding protective system.
At that time, as a new cross-disciplinary science, grounding engineering was yet to be studied.
She could expect any assistance from nobody; the only way was to rely on the literature of the related subject. She burnt her heart with consciousness and conscience of being a scientist.
Recollecting that time, she said: To avoid difficulty was not right. I had to challenge it. The country had enabled me, a girl born into an ordinary educator’s family in South Hamgyong Province, to study at Kim Chaek University of Technology and become a teacher of the university. The way to return the country’s favour was to solve the sci-tech problems urgently needed by the country.
After making painstaking efforts, she learned the construction principle of grounding protective system, and eventually her design greatly contributed to the renovation project at the Taedonggang Brewery while guaranteeing the reliability and stability of its integrated production system.
Later, she took part in many renovation projects including those at the Tanchon Smeltery, Huichon Power Station, Pyongyang Wheat Flour Processing Factory, Pyongyang Children’s Foodstuff Factory and Pyongyang Condiments Factory, establishing grounding protective systems of the Korean style, which is the basis of an integrated production system.
In addition, she presented a paper on protecting the small and medium-sized power stations in the city of Samjiyon from thunderbolt, so that valuable assets of the country would not suffer from electromagnetic wave.
As she had to conduct scientific research as well as educational work like giving lectures and working out teaching plans, she was always pressed for time. She worked hard even on holidays.
She has put on a scientific footing and formulated the successes and experiences she had gained while closely combining educational work and scientific research, presenting dozens of papers related to the grounding engineering, including Research on the grounding system in low-voltage electric distribution system connected to electronic information equipment , and over 10 textbooks and reference books including EMC Technolog y.
In addition, she has written such teaching materials for the universal 12-year compulsory education as Basic Technology and Basics of Technical Activities .
One who has high capability, burning passion and pride and sense of justice in one’s job can achieve success in one’s work.
